Sky, Fifth Season and Lightbox are collaborating in a premium documentary series that tells the extraordinary story of a group of young people from all over the world who team up to take down an Italian police robber.
Based on the successful podcast Verified, Bad Host: Hunting the Couchsurfing Predator is produced in collaboration with Scripps. Produced by Simon and Jonathan Chinn’s Lightbox, the project will be one of the main projects of the fifth season of Mipcom Cannes.
Bad Host tells the Tinder scammer-style story of how a group of remarkable young women who didn’t know each other fell victim to a predator who lured them into hooking up with him through couchsurfing, a website where travelers can find reliable hosts to take them to their homes for free. Looking for each other through the Internet, the young women joined forces and fought for six years, often in the face of indifference in their native countries, to bring him to justice.
“Lightbox is known for creating compelling and loud documentaries that have a real purpose at the center,” said Poppy Dixon, director of Documentaries at Sky. “Hand in hand with the incredible women and journalists at the center of this story, they have created a series that absolutely delivers a victim-led investigation of the true crime that will include the audience at all times.”
