Chennaiyin FC is pleased to announce defender Ryan Edwards as the latest foreign addition ahead of the 2023/24 Indian Super League season.
“We are delighted to have Ryan Edwards on board. We hunted him for a long time in the summer. He received many offers from other clubs. He is an excellent defender and a real leader, in the form of Peter Hartley, whom I had in Jamshedpur. Great leadership qualities, a wonderful player and will be a great addition to the squad. We are looking forward to welcoming him to Chennaiyin like all the players, ” coach Owen Coyle said about the new addition.
Edwards last played for the Scots at Dundee United, where he made 112 appearances and scored eight goals in all competitions in three seasons; including 92 appearances in the Scottish First Division.
In the middle of the 2021/22 season, Edwards was awarded the captain’s armband when he led the team to fourth place in the Premier League and helped his team qualify for the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Europa Conference League. He led the team 53 times in all competitions.
Born in Liverpool, the central defender showed leadership qualities from an early age and was the captain of the Blackburn FC team that reached the final of the FA Youth Cup in 2011/12.
” I see it as a very big and exciting challenge to join this great club, and I hope for a successful season,” Edwards commented on the move to the club.
The 29-year-old spent his entire time as a professional player in England before moving to Scotland. He played 277 games for clubs such as Plymouth Argyle, Rochdale AFC and Blackpool FC, including 136 games for English club Morecambe FC in Division 4.
