Where to Watch and Stream The Royal Hotel

Filmmaker Kitty Green and actress Julia Garner have teamed up again for the psychological thriller The Royal Hotel. Loosely based on the shocking events of the 2016 documentary Hotel Coolgardie, the film follows two American backpackers, Hanna and Liv, who take a job in a remote bar in the remote Australian Outback. At first, Hanna and Liv hoped to get a glimpse behind the scenes of the isolated Outback community, but Hanna and Liv’s paranoia grows when they realize that the guests of the bar have only one thing on their mind. The Royal Hotel is the second collaboration between Green and Garner, the first being the 2019 drama The Assistant, which offers a startling insight into sexual harassment in the workplace by companies. It looks like the Royal Hotel is also tackling the dark realities of bullying, but this time against the backdrop of a sparsely explored and sparsely populated landscape.

Julia Garner (Ozark) and Jessica Henwick (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery) play American backpackers Hanna and Liv. They are joined by Herbert Nordrum (The Worst Person in the World) as Torsten, Ursula Yovich (Mystery Road) as Carol, Alex Malone (RFDS) as Jules, Kate Cheel (Strange Colors) as Cassie, Hugo Weaving (The Lord of the Rings) as Billy, a bar owner, James Frecheville (Peaky Blinders) as Teeth, Nic Darrigo in his film debut as Kev, Adam Morgan (The Babadook) as Keith, Adam MacNeill (Psycho) as Macca, Ben Eggleton made his film debut as Spanners , Barbara Lowing (Secrets and Lies) as Glenda, Daniel Henshall (Defending Jacob) as Dolly and Bruce R. Carter (Picnic at Hanging Rock) as Darren. Keep reading to find out how to see the Royal Hotel.

Watch the trailer for The Royal Hotel

NEON released a teaser of the Royal Hotel on her official YouTube channel on September 7, 2023. Coming out of the trailer, you can see that both Hanna and Liv have very different ideas about the work inside. The latter shows himself wild and carefree, longs for adventure and thrives in the atmosphere of the bar. However, Hanna hesitates from the very beginning, immediately becomes discouraged due to indecent customers and the remoteness of the place. Throughout the video, the feeling of danger is palpable, giving viewers the idea that although the bar may be shabby, the true extent of the darkness has not yet been discovered. The trailer also lets us know how isolated Hanna and Liv are. Carol asks the couple to make money and get on the next bus to get out of there, but when Hanna tries to follow Carol’s advice, Billy indignantly tells her that the buses are few and far between inside and the next one is not for days. Will Hanna stay and endure the wait, and most importantly, will she manage to get away from her and Liv before inescapable danger consumes them both?

What is the background of The Royal Hotel

The Royal Hotel is inspired by the events of the award-winning 2016 documentary film Hotel Coolgardie. The documentary offers a surprising look at the isolated community of the Australian outback and follows the experience of two Finnish backpackers, Lina and Steph, who hope to top up their travel money by working in a lonely bar that is simply a “point on the map”. Lina and Steph are new to the country and initially enjoy the chance to see a side of Australia that most tourists will never see, but it doesn’t take long for unwanted attention and a gloomy feeling of claustrophobia to turn their travel dream into a living nightmare. Hotel Coolgardie can be streamed as part of Prime Video’s exciting documentary collection.
